Agriculture is one of the first activities that human beings have dedicated since they began to live in a sedentary way. However, this has evolved greatly. For example, the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides was introduced in order to accelerate the process of crop growth and fight against pests. However, healthy food flows have warned of the dangers of food consumption whose crops rely on the use of these inputs.

In other words, although agriculture has always been a dynamic activity, one of the most important trends in recent years is that it is now the customer that influences its evolution. This means that the activity does not change according to what is necessarily better or more practical, but according to what it sells. In this context, small farmers face the challenge of producing organically, without having experience of it, but also with few tools and capacities to comply with the cumbersome process to obtain the certificate of organic production. And is that the farmers must wait three years to certify themselves as organic producers, which delays market and sales issues.

Fortunately for them, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is implementing a system in which farmers can obtain a “Transition Certificate.” This means that those who are moving from growing non-organic food to growing organic food can sell their products as if they were organic instead of waiting three years to do it. However, the certificate has certain requirements, such as not using banned products for organic farming, such as pesticides, for a whole year.

USDA stated that in order to achieve this goal, it would be working with external agencies responsible for certifying and directing inspections, so that farmers who wish to obtain this certificate of transition can be investigated and certified.

As mentioned, equal farmers should remain for a year without using products banned for organic farming. However, the waiting time has been significantly reduced, thanks to which it is expected that more and more farmers will decide to make the transition from non-organic to organic.

Unfortunately, there are no such measures in our country. However, the USDA example can be followed. Who knows, perhaps it would lead to a change in the way agriculture works in our country.
